3 Things to Remember on the Hard Days of Life:
One of my favorite kids’ movies is Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.
Alexander, the middle child in the movie, has A LOT of bad days. The rest of his family, unlike Alexander, seem to have the perfect life. As the older brother in the movie puts it, they are “#blessed.”
On Alexander’s birthday, after yet another terrible day for him, he wishes for just one thing: that his family would finally understand how it feels to have a bad day.
The next day, Alexander’s wish comes true in a hilarious way. (Seriously, if you’ve never seen the movie, you should. If you like Steve Carell or Jennifer Garner, you’ll enjoy it.)
Toward the end of the terrible day, Alexander says something like this, “Some days are just bad and nothing can fix it.”
What Alexander says is true, isn’t it?
Some days are just. plain. hard.
Though I agree with Alexander that there are some things we can’t fix, I don’t think that means there’s nothing we can do.
There are a few things we can remind ourselves of on the hard days that can help us through them.
3 things to remember on the hard days of life:
-
One bad day doesn’t mean you have a bad life.
Just because today has been rough doesn’t mean your entire life is bad.
Sometimes when we’re in the middle of a really tough season, we feel like everything is terrible. We have a hard time finding the blessings in our lives because the pain overshadows everything.
In reality, we all have bad days. But bad days don’t equal bad lives.
Tomorrow is a new day, so don’t lose hope.
-
God is still with you, even when your situation suggests otherwise, and He can bring good out of anything (even this).
I love Hebrews 13:5: “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”
That means that even this (whatever your this is) cannot separate you from the Lord’s presence.
Even when our feelings try and convince us God doesn’t care, He does. The Bible is clear that God is with us, no matter what.
It’s also clear he will use even the terrible things we go through to bring about something good.
Romans 8:28: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.”
I love that this verse says “all.”
It doesn’t say “most” or “some.” Because it says “all,” we can know that God can—and will—bring something good from the hard times.

Thankfulness is a choice.
A few years ago, someone told me this. To be honest, at the time, it made me mad. She wasn’t in my shoes, going through my problems, so I didn’t think she had the right to tell me I needed to choose to be thankful.
Now, though, I know she was right.
Thankfulness is a choice.
We can choose to give thanks, even in the midst of struggles.
It might be harder on some days to choose thanksgiving, but it’s possible.
We just have to look a little harder.
Let’s chat: what other reminders help you get through the tough days?

Very encouraging post, Lindsey!
Your words are so inspiring! We definitely have much to be thankful for in America! God Bless!
Thanks for sharing the encouragement! I pray an remember that God is sovereign.
On really bad days I say the Serenity Prayer as many times as I need to.
great post. Looking forward to reading “8 Ways to Stop Missing Life and Start Embracing It.”
Thanks so much! I hope you enjoy it:)
you are an amazing woman of God and I’m eager to learn from you!
Thank you, Jeanette. I appreciate your words of encouragement so very much:)
My mother was my rock during a series of bad days when my husband walked out on me when my children were toddlers.
She kept reminding me of Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” and the mantra ” This to shall pass”. Without her, I would have definitely had a very difficult time as I adjusted to my new life.
Thanks so much for sharing about your mom. She sounds like an amazing lady! I love Phil. 4:13. Great verse.
Other reminders that help me get through the day is my family pictures and those of my 7 year old son. I know that no matter how tough the day is when I get home and hold them in my arms all that will fade and tomorrow is another day and will be different.
Thanks for sharing, Stephanie. I love the idea of using family pictures as reminders!
I have written some encouraging scripture on a card that I keep in my purse so when I’m feeling like everything is going wrong I can set my mind straight, back on Jesus.
Sarah, that’s such a great idea! There’s no better way to refocus our minds than to use Scripture.
